Bad Lawyer Billboards: Faking Vandalism for Publicity?

We previously brought you the WORST billboards in two volumes (1 and 2).  We have a few new ones to possibly add.

I became aware of this when I saw this news story: http://wjtv.com/2015/09/04/law-office-billboard-vandalized-but-the-company-says-they-love-it/.  I was skeptical, but seeing the Mississippi State University themed billboard ahead of football season intrigued me, as did the audacity of someone vandalizing not just the billboard of a lawyer, but a strident Florida Gator fan named John Morgan.

Politics and Mudslinging: Judges Gone Wild!!!

It is easy to tell when an election is coming up. Everywhere you look, on television, the internet, radio, in newspapers, there are adults acting in ways that they would punish their own children for. Name calling, bullying, lying and the such. This behavior is exemplified every election, election after election. It is easy to overlook the attacks, as we have become immune to the questionable political antics being shoved in our faces. These campaign strategies do not really bother me. When they do bother me, it is when they are being used by judges to gain an edge against other judges. Judges hold such an important and powerful position, they must be held to a higher standard.

Why You Won’t See US Politicians and Heads of State Get All Wet with ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The State Department’s lawyers, the Committee on House Administration and the Defense Department’s Office of General Counsel Standards of Conduct Office and other government legal departments have banned U.S. Ambassadors, high-profile workers stationed overseas, current service members, DOD employees, members of Congress and the President from participating in the ALS’ ice bucket challenge.  According to the fuddy duddy attorneys, the ice bucket challenge “runs afoul of federal ethics rules barring officials from using public office for private gain no matter how worthy the cause.” Read more »

New Trend in Legal Advertising: “Not” Celebrity Endorsements

Under Florida Bar Rule 4-7.15, Unduly Manipulative or Intrusive Advertisements, the Florida Bar prevents an advertisement which “contains the voice or image of a celebrity, except that a lawyer may use the voice or image of a local announcer, disc jockey or radio personality who regularly records advertisements so long as the person recording the announcement does not endorse or offer a testimonial on behalf of the advertising lawyer or law firm.”  Read more »

Eastbound & Browns: Is Johnny Manziel Becoming Kenny Powers?

Every week I become more convinced that Johnny Manziel is the closest thing professional sports will ever have to a real-life Kenny Powers (exception: John Rocker). Manziel’s middle-finger waving episode on Monday night was just one more event in what is now a long list of  Kenny Power-like moves. The two have several similarities.

Kenny Powers is a character from the HBO comedy series, Eastbound & Down. Johnny Manziel is a character from the NFL comedy series the Cleveland Browns. Kenny Powers likes to party. Manziel likes to party. Kenny Powers does not care what anyone thinks about his partying and decision making. Manziel doesn’t care what anyone thinks about his partying and decision making. Kenny Powers gives the finger during games. Manziel gives the finger during games. Johnny Manziel drinks champagne on inflatable swans and talks to stacks of cash as if they were a telephone. Kenny Powers would love nothing more than to drink champagne on a swan and pretend that stacks of cash are cell phones. If Powers and Manziel were to ever meet, they would be best friends. Top 35 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Videos

The Ice Bucket Challenge is all the rage.  The “challenge” is simple.  Once challenged, you donate $100 or douse yourself with iced water, record it and pass the challenge on to others via social media.  It all started with Pete Frates, a former baseball player at Boston College who has been living with ALS since 2012. He floated the idea and his former teammates, as well as other Boston-area athletes, who took him up on it. It was noticed and covered by local media and that attention, along with social media’s viral nature, launched it onto a much larger stage. Read more »

Rory McIlroy Makes Awesome Save at the End of the PGA Championship – the Trophy

On August 10, 2014, Rory McIlroy made history and then he saved it. After claiming his fourth major, he had to step into catch the handing off the PGA Championship’s Wanamaker Trophy in the dark at Valhalla, as Ted Bishop of the PGA Tour fumbled it handing it to Rory.  The top flew off and then the whole trophy looked unstable. See the video below. Read more »

Weird Laws

As always, the Law Office of John M. Phillips’ facebook page was posting “strange laws.” Here are a few of  this week’s best:

  • It is illegal to put ice cream on cherry pie in Kansas.
  • In Tennessee, it is illegal to use a lasso to catch a fish.
  • In Oklahoma, people who make “ugly faces” at dogs may be fined and/or jailed. Read more »
